LAHORE, Feb 14: Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi on Monday directed the assessment of rain damages in Murree, Kotli Satian and other parts of the province.

Presiding over a high-level meeting, the chief minister also asked the provincial administration to ensure solid relief work in all rain-hit areas of the Punjab.

The CM asked two of his cabinet colleagues, Law Minister Raja Basharat and Communications Minister Chaudhry Zahiruddin, to visit the affected areas and immediately start relief work there. He further directed improvement in the provision of food items to the affected population.

CANADIAN MP: Canadian parliamentarian Carolyne Parish said on Monday that Pakistanis were playing an active role in education, health, commerce and other sectors of her country.

During a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi here, Ms Parish said: "Lahore is an important cultural centre, and the way Basant and spring festivals are celebrated here is highly laudable."

National Congress of Pakistani Canadians' President Waqar Gillani, who accompanied Ms Parish, lauded the role of PML President Shujaat Husain and Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi for promoting democratic norms in Pakistan.

The chief minister said the pace of infrastructure development in the province had been enhanced; underpasses were being constructed in big cities to improve traffic flow; steps being taken to improve the financial condition of farmers; and attention being paid to the construction of farm-to-market roads.

He said new insurance system for crops had been introduced due to which the farmers had been working vigorously to improve the productivity. Special attention was being paid towards the promotion of education, and steps being taken to improve the law and order.
