KARACHI, Feb 2: The Karachi University Teachers' Society on Wednesday expressed deep concern over the revealing statement of US President George Bush that the so-called reforms in the educational sector in Pakistan had been possible because of his directives.

In a statement, KUTS Secretary Prof Sarwar Nasim demanded that the Foreign Office should verify the interview of President Bush so that the correct situation could be placed before the nation.

The interview was telecast by a US TV channel and later the same was published in a local newspaper. KUTS Secretary Sarwar Nasim said that efforts have been made for the last two years to impose the Model University Ordinance aimed at bringing the so-called reforms at public sector universities.

He said that such reforms were incompatible with country's objectives, thus against the social, cultural and economic norms and values of the country. He reiterated that this was the reason for which about 7,000 teachers of public sector universities rejected the MUO.

However, he regretted that efforts were still being made to impose the ordinance, master minded by foreigners who had no knowledge of local problems and prospects.

Sarwar Nasim said that the government should realize that Pakistani scholars working in public sector varsities were capable enough to bring timely changes in the University Act which would be compatible with social norms and values. -PPI
