Published January 24, 2005

QAMBAR, Jan 23: A large number of people observed a token hunger strike on Sunday in protest against the failure of the government to arrest killers of four protestors and the renaming of the Qambar district.

Leaders of the Save-District Struggle Committee were present at the hunger strike camp. Committee leaders Bhao Buriro, Yousuf Brohi and Nazir Tunio criticized indifferent attitude of the government, saying it was not interested to solve the Qambar issue.

Speaking at a press conference, they said 15 days had passed but the report of judicial probe had not been made public. They said policemen involved in firing had not been arrested.

They announced that the committee would observe a hunger strike on Jan 25 and held rallies on Jan 26 and 28. They said a complete strike would be observed on Jan 29 if their demands were not meet.

ADVISER: An adviser to the Sindh chief minister, Sultan Khuhawar, has said that if the name of the Shahdadkot district was changed, he will resign from his post. Talking to delegations in Shahdadkot, he said he had promised with voters that if he won the election he would try to make Shahdadkot a district.

KILLED: A man, Bakhat Ali, 45, was shot dead near the Bakarani Pul on Sunday. An FIR in this connection was lodged by a brother of the deceased at the Bakarani police station. The police arrested Illahi Bux in the case. In another incident, a motorcyclist was injured when some bandits opened fire on him.

Three armed men intercepted Ismail on the Bair Sharif road and tried to hijack his motorbike. On his resistance, they opened fire on him and drove away in a vehicle. The injured was admitted to a Larkana hospital. -PPI
