KARACHI, Jan 12: City Nazim Niamatullah Khan on Tuesday evening laid foundation stone of a project under which traffic signals are being installed at UP Morr, North Karachi , and improvement of the intersection is being carried out by the Transport and Communication Department of the city government.
The project envisages new channels for vehicular traffic at this intersection. The total cost of the project has been estimated at Rs23 million. The department plans to widen the roads leading to the UP Morr whereas the 24- feet-wide service road would be dualized and converted to traffic channel.
Under the project, footpaths would also be constructed, according to the city nazim who announced that the work on the installation of traffic signals would be completed on a priority basis.
Speaking on the occasion, he directed the concerned officials to ensure a smooth flow of traffic at the site of the project while the development work was in progress. He also asked them to ensure that no trouble was caused to people due to the development activities.
Referring to the similar development projects undertaken at Purani Numaish, Guru Mandir, Five Star, Jauhar Morr and other intersections, he said that no traffic jam would be experienced by citizens at UP Morr intersection after completion of the new project.
He said that following the improvement of the intersection, the vehicular traffic towards Godhra Camp, North Karachi and Surjani Town through the UP Morr would face no hindrance.
The ceremony was also addressed by North Karachi Town Nazim Shafiqur Rehman Usmani, EDO Transport Mohammad Athar, Adviser to the City Nazim on Transport Mohammad Tufail and others. The EDO told the audience that there were around an average 1.5 vehicles using city roads and about 150 more vehicles added to the number every day.
LEASE OFFICE: The city government has established a lease camp office in Frontier Colony for the granting of proprietary rights to residents of the Katchi Abadi, adds APP.
Inaugurating the camp on Tuesday night, City Nazim Niamatullah Khan said that no one would be barred from coming to Karachi because every Pakistani citizen enjoyed the right to settle anywhere in the country, including this city.
He said that development of Karachi could be attributed to the workers living in katchi abadis. He said that development schemes were being carried out to make Karachi a model city and this was being acknowledged at every level in the country.
He pointed out that all UC nazims of Karachi had been given Rs3.4 million in the first year and Rs6.4 million in the following two years for the purpose of executing development schemes in their respective areas.
He said that the 30 projects, lying in abeyance for years, had been completed over the last three years. He said the department of Sindh Katchi Abadis should have been merged into the city government under the SLGO.
The lease distribution ceremony was also addressed by MNA Laeeq Ahmed Khan, MPA Hameedullah Khan, Chairman Land Committee Goharul Islam, DO Katchi Abadis Razia Sultana and Naib Nazim Haji Bashir Ahmed.
Goharul Islam said that a lease file was being issued on payment of Rs25. The application form is in Urdu; lease form has been simplified and the file carries the lease rates.
