KARACHI, Jan 11: The Federal Urdu University for Arts, Sciences and Technology has decided to issue another merit list for admissions to various departments of the university, said sources on the campus.

It was learnt that a meeting of representatives of various student groups and the Vice Chancellor, Dr Iqbal Mohsin, was held on Tuesday to look into the grievances of students, who had reportedly resorted to agitation on Monday.

The varsity administration on Monday decided to put off the honours class exams till Jan 25, and suspend classes on both its two campuses till Jan 12, as teachers had denied performing duties in view of the alleged indecent attitude of some groups of students towards them.

A source on the campus said that in a situation when the varsity administration had already been looking into the grievances of the groups in question, the threatening postures adopted by the students was uncalled for.

It was learnt that the groups were not satisfied with the admissions carried out for the new session, as, according to it, a good number of applicants had been unable to get a place in departments of their choice.

In view of the leftover cases, the groups had been demanding for accommodation of a number of those students at other departments where seats were available, said a student activist.

Various student groups had formed an alliance on the issue of admissions. They had been pursuing the authorities to review the admission proceedings and place students in question, as seats were still available at some of the departments, said another source.

The first and second year BA (Honours) examinations were in progress nowadays, while the BSc (Honours) were to commence on January 10 (Monday). About 1,700 students were registered for both the exams.

A source privy to the Tuesday meeting of the VC and the student groups said that the meeting had helped remove certain misunderstandings among the students, and it was likely that problems would further be sorted out within a couple of days.

It was said that the committee constituted by the VC would now go through the admission-data of the applicants and their claim forms, and place the students in departments where seats were available, provided that the students fulfilled the merit criteria.

Any applicant, who had failed to get admission as per merit to any of the three departments mentioned by him originally on the admission forms, would now be tried at other departments.

If the marks of the qualifying exams of the student are found to be more than the cut-off marks in the first admission list, the applicant would be included in the fresh lists, subject to availability of seats, the source added.

The four-member committee, comprising the registrar, controller of examinations and two deans, was likely to start placement review work from Wednesday, it was further learnt.
