KHAIRPUR, Jan 11: The nazim, naib nazim and 22 councillors of the Bukhari Union Council on Tuesday resigned to protest against the death of three children who fell in an open manhole.

Speaking at a press conference at the council's office here, Nazim Syed Amjad Shah Jilani, Naib Nazim Mukhtiar Solangi and councillors Farhana Soomro, Naseem Begum, Salma Jilani, Hoorul Nisa, Ramzan Mirani, Shaman Lal and others, belonging to the Awam Dost Panel, said they resigned in protest against the death of Abdul Rasheed, Mohammad Ashfaq Soomro and Abdul Karim who drowned in the manhole in the Osta Gahi locality on Sunday.

They regretted that no legal proceedings had been initiated in the matter. Later, they marched towards the A-section police station and held a protest demonstration, demanding registration of a murder case against the Khairpur taluka municipal administration.

They also met the SHO who told them to submit an application with the DPO. Later, they marched to the district nazim's office. A large number of area residents also joined the protesting councillors during their march through the Shahi Bazaar, Kutchehry Road, Chatti Chowk and other areas.

CHIEF MINISTER: Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim has taken a serious notice of the death of the children and directed the Khairpur DCO to provide assistance to their families.

They DCO told this correspondent by telephone that he had contacted the families but they were not ready to lodge an FIR. However, he said, he had moved the local government secretary for holding an inquiry into the matter.

MAN KIDNAPPED: A man was kidnapped by four armed persons from the National Highway in the Misri Shah village, Kot Diji police station jurisdiction, on Monday night.

The man kidnapped was identified as Sohrab Shaikh. The gunmen injured Mohammad Salik Shaikh and Ali Gul Shaikh when they offered resistance. Reports said Sohrab had left Nawabshah after being declared a karo and settled near Misri Shah. No case was registered till the filing of this report.
