Centcom chief arrives

ISLAMABAD, Jan 9: Commander of the US Central Command Gen John P. Abizaid arrived here on a two-day official visit to Pakistan on Sunday.

At the Chaklala airbase, Gen Abizaid was received by the Director-General Weapons and Equipment of Pakistan Army, Lt-Gen Imtiaz Hussain, and other senior officials.

The visit of the Centcom chief follows Pakistan's formal request to the US-led coalition forces in Kabul to investigate a border skirmish on Pak-Afghan border earlier last week in which one Pakistani soldier was killed and three others injured.

In reply to a question if Pakistan would raise the issue of border skirmish with the Centcom chief, military spokesman Maj-Gen Shaukat Sultan told Dawn, "bilateral issues of mutual and professional interest would be raised during the meetings."

The border skirmish which claimed the life of the Pakistani soldier was described as an incident of minor tactical nature by the ISPR chief. Asked if the issue of weapon sales to Pakistan would be discussed with Gen Abizaid, he stuck to his earlier reply and said all issues of bilateral interest would come under discussion.
