GUJRANWALA, Jan 3: An SHO and a tax inspector were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Establishment on the charge of corruption here on Monday.

SHO Rana Islam Khan had taken Rs20,000 in bribe for the release of the accused involved in a criminal case during his posting at Naushera Virkan. But he did not release the accused despite receiving bribe from the heirs of the accused. At this, they reported the matter to the ACE. Assistant director Maqsood Lone arrested the inspector after he was found guilty of charges in an inquiry.

While city tehsil council's tax inspector Shafiqur Rehman was also arrested by the ACE for corruption charges. The accused were sent to jail.SHOT DEAD: A motor mechanic was shot dead by bandits on resistance during a robbery bid on Sheikhupura Road here on Monday.

Muhammad Yasin was on his way home from his workshop by his motorcycle. Near Bilal Market, two robbers intercepted him. They snatched cash and other valuables from him and tried to drove away with his bike. For holding them out, the bandits opened fire on him. He died on the spot. Police have registered a case and are investigating.

PAPERS FILED: Eighteen people on Monday filed nomination papers for seven seats of the District Bar Associations. Sitting president Saifullah Cheema, former president Navid Anwar Navid, former general secretary Khalid Jamil and Munir Abbasi filed their nomination for the office of president, while Anwar Kamboh, Ejaz Nazir and Sulman Gujjar for senior vice-president and Khidmat Husain Waqar, Afzal Soraya and Rana Ayub Ali for vice-president, respectively. Advocate Anwar Tufail was elected unopposed as general secretary. The annual elections will be held on Jan 15.
