FAISALABAD, Jan 3: The Faisalabad police claimed to have arrested maximum number of proclaimed offenders in a fortnight during a campaign launched on the directives of the DIG.

Special teams had been constituted by the district police officers of Faisalabad, Jhang and Toba Tek Singh for the arrest of criminals.

The Faisalabad police arrested 497 proclaimed offenders, Jhang police nabbed 407 and Toba Tek Singh rounded up 96. The arrested criminals had been sent to jail. However, raids are being conducted for the arrest of their accomplices.

COP HELD: The Anti-Corruption Establishment arrested a police sub-inspector and a patwari for receiving bribe and committing fraud. Muhammad Aslam of Tandlinawala lodged a complaint with the ACE that Sub-Inspector Hakim Ali had received Rs20,000 bribe from him during investigation of a case.

A Case was registered against the sub-inspector on September 8, 2001, and judicial action was approved against him on April 19, 2002. An ACE team on Monday arrested Hakim from his house. The ACE arrested Patwari Yaqoob Masih, posted at Kamalia in Toba Tek Singh district on the charge of fraudulently transferring a piece of land.

POLICE FAILURE: Police have failed to round up two convicts who had escaped from the Central Jail nine days ago. A special team comprising investigation wing and prisons department officials raided different places in and around the city for the arrest of two convicts Muhammad Ishtiaq and Sabir Husain, but failed.

Meanwhile, the prisons officials held responsible for the escape of prisoners were being interrogated. The process has so far been proved futile as none of the personnel is ready to take the responsibility.

Jail superintendent Salak Jalal, two deputy superintendents, two assistant superintendents, three head warders and 12 warders had been suspended from service. Except the superintendents, the 17 personnel are in custody since the escape of prisoners.

Ishtiaq and Sabir, who were undergoing life imprisonment, had fled from the prison on the night of Dec 24 with the alleged connivance of the jail functionaries. A case was registered by the Saddar police against the staff on duty.
