KARACHI, Dec 31: Two suspected bandits were shot dead outside a bank branch in F B Area on Friday morning. Police said that one Mohammad Saleem came out of the MCB Water Pump branch after withdrawing cash, when two suspects snatched the cash and tried to flee.

Mr Saleem raised an alarm, which caught attention of a constable, Irfan, who challenged them ensuing an exchange of fire, the police added. The police said that both the suspects were critically wounded by the constable's firing. They were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where the two were pronounced dead on arrival.

One of the suspected bandits was identified as Altaf Husain, hailing from Azad Kashmir, while the other could not be identified. Following the incident, Mr Saleem awarded Rs3,000 to the police constable. In addition, the bank awarded Rs5,000 to Irfan, while the CCPO promoted him to the rank of head constable.

KILLED: In another incident, a head constable, working as Karachi DCO's guard, was shot dead by unknown persons in the limits of Docks police station on Friday morning.

Police said that HC Raja Sikandar was returning home from his duty when unknown persons on a motorcycle opened fire at him. He was taken to the Civil Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

VIOLANCE: Youths took to the streets at Abul Hasan Ishapani Road on Friday evening when unknown persons attacked and ransacked a sheermal house. According to reports, a white Alto, fitted with a warning light, usually used by police vehicles, came to the Haji Mohammad Sheermal House located at main Abul Hasan Ishapani Road and the inmates bought some sheermals.

When the shopkeeper asked for the money against the sheermals, the unknown persons ransacked the shop and left the spot. A little later, the same vehicle returned along with a Pajero.

Unknown persons alighted from the vehicle and resorted to aerial firing. They also roughed up the shopkeeper and escaped. Following the incident, youths from the area took to the streets and blocked the road by setting up bonfire for over two hours.

FOILED: A bank robbery was foiled on Friday morning when a private security guard and a police constable challenged a gang of six robbers who had entered a UBL branch at Pakistan Chowk.

Kharadar DSP Haseeb Baig told Dawn six bandits entered the UBL branch and held the bank staff hostage. When the bandits demanded keys of bank's strong room, a private security guard of the National Police Foundation, who was stationed at his kiosk, opened fire at the bandits.

Hearing the gunshots, a police constable posted near the bank also opened fire forcing the bandits to flee before they could collect any cash from the bank. An FIR, 321/2004, was lodged at Kharadar police station by the bank manager, the DSP added.
