MMA plans to hold 'black day' rallies

ISLAMABAD, Dec 30: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal will observe black day all over the country on Jan 1, by staging protest demonstrations on the uniform issue.

This was stated by MMA MNA and deputy chief of Jamaat-i-Islami Punjab, Mian Mohammad Aslam, while speaking at a workers rally on Thursday.

He said the MMA activists would hoist black flags on their houses, wear black bands and hold public rallies at town and tehsil levels. In Islamabad, protest demonstrations will be held at Aabpara, China Chowk, Blue Area, Golra and Rawat, the MNA said.

He said that the status of President Gen Pervez Musharraf would become controversial and unconstitutional after Dec 31 as he was required to shed his uniform by that date under an MMA-government agreement.

Mian Aslam said the MMA would neither accept military rule nor the supremacy of civil bureaucracy over the constitution and democracy. "The MMA will not compromise on the country's Islamic ideology and identity," he added.

The MMA leader said that the alliance's leadership would announce its programme for the next phase of the anti-uniform movement after Jan 1. A six-member committee had already been constituted to contact other opposition parties for launching a joint struggle, he added.

Mian Aslam said the MMA would also present a charge-sheet against the government on its failure to revive economy and for deviating from Islamic and ideological principles during its anti-uniform campaign.

He said the alliance would not compromise on any issue which had been settled through the MMA-government dialogue. The MMA would also organize briefing sessions for religious scholars, district bar associations and journalists, editors and writers after Jan 1 to present its viewpoint.
