PESHAWAR, Dec 23: A student of the Superior Science College was killed and at least 25 students were injured when a passenger van overturned on the Ring Road here on Thursday morning.

Witnesses and police officials told Dawn that some students were trying to stop passenger vans and buses by force on Thursday on the Ring Road for going to their college. But the passenger vans and buses were not stopping their vehicles out of fear that the students would force drivers to be dropped at their college gate, which was far away from their normal route, they said.

The students, however, succeeded in stopping one passenger van but the driver sped away after picking up only one student Roohullah, and left the remaining students at the bus stop.

The students, who were left out, stopped another passenger van, boarded the vehicle and forced its driver to chase the van which had not picked them up. Butthe van driver lost control and the van overturned, killing Fawad Ahmad, a student of intermediate final in the college, and injuring 25 others.

The student, who was picked up by the other van, was badly beaten by the cleaner and driver of the other van and was dropped at the Kambo bus stand. The police have registered a case and started search for the van cleaner and driver.

Meanwhile, the students of the Superior Science College held a protest in front of the Peshawar Press Club and demanded of the government to pay one million rupees as compensation to the student and Rs500,000 to the student severely beaten by the van driver and cleaner. They also gave an ultimatum to the police to arrest the two accused within 24 hours otherwise they would not allow the public transport to ply on the road.

ARREST: The Corporate Circle of the Federal Investigation Agency on Thursday arrested the owner of a so-called import and export office on charges of dealing in illegal Hawala business.

Officials said that an FIA team, on a tip-off, raided the office of the Sarhad Anti-Credit Business Concern and arrested its owner Masood Ahmad, a resident of Dara Adamkhel.
