PESHAWAR, Dec 14: The Edwards College will start evening classes from the next academic year to accommodate larger number of students.

A decision to this effect was taken by the elite educational institution's board of governors in a meeting presided over by NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah here on Tuesday.

An official handout said that the governor called for constituting a committee of experts to materialize the proposal before the start of the next academic session. The meeting decided that the selection of disciplines for evening classes should be job-oriented.

The meeting was attended among others by Secretary of Higher Education Sahibzada Muhammad Khalid, Vice Chancellor of the Peshawar University Lt-Gen Mumtaz Gul, Bishop of Peshawar Reverend Mano Rumalshah.

It decided that services of additional faculty would have to be acquired to run the evening shift besides allowing the college's management to hire the services of the academic staff on contract basis to meet a teacher's shortage.

The meeting appreciated the college administration's efforts to develop contacts with foreign educational institutions and called for making efforts to promote quality education.

The governor called for promoting faculty exchange programmes with foreign institutions and said that they should be devised to achieve dual purpose of training and promotion of knowledge.
