KARACHI, Dec 8: In a major anti-encroachment operation, the city government's district office (Revenue), Orangi Town, on Wednesday demolished over 250 encroachments on Shahrah-i-Orangi.

The encroachments were removed on a 2.5 kilometre-long portion of the road, and these included kutcha and pucca shops, houses and poultry farms. The encroachments were creating hindrance in the construction of the road, said CDGK sources.

With the removal of encroachments, construction of the road would gear up, they added. The operation was undertaken under the supervision of Orangi Project's district officer, Sharique Ilyas.

The road had been lying in a dilapidated condition since long, and a number of buses, mini-buses and coaches had withdrawn from Orangi, while rickshaws and taxis have been charging exorbitant fares.
