QUETTA, Dec 2: An agreement was signed on Thursday for implementation of the great Quetta water supply project funded by the federal government.

The agreement was signed in a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Jam Mir Mohammad Yousuf. Work on the mega project would be started by Dec 15. It would cost Rs8 billion.

The meeting was informed that the project would be completed in two phases. Under the first phase, scheduled to be completed by April 1, Quetta would be provided water according to its requirement on emergency basis.

In the first phase, three tube-well feeders would be made active and linked to the central water distribution system and the old pipeline would be replaced with new one.

After completion of the first phase, Quetta would get 25 million gallon water daily and in the next summer season, there would be no shortage of water in any area of the provincial capital.

The meeting was also told that in the second phase, all old water pipelines would be replaced and two dams would be constructed near Quetta, which would help in recharging the under-ground water resources. The sewerage system would also be improved and through recycling, water would be made reusable.

After completion of the project, around 36 million gallon water would be available to the citizen of Quetta daily. The chief minister expressed his pleasure over the agreement and urged consultants and the construction company to ensure standard of construction as it was a very important project for Quetta.

He also stressed for completing the project in time and asked Wasa Balochistan to evolve a comprehensive supervision system for the project and remove all hurdles in the way of this project.
