MMA, ARD unanimous on army's exit

DERA GHAZI KHAN, Nov 22: There was no harmony or understanding between the ARD and the MMA at present over the socio-political future of the country except on the issue of exclusion of military's role in the politics of the country , said Jamaat-i-Islami general secretary Syed Munawar Hasan on Monday while addressing the Dera Bar Association and later talking to mediamen.

He, however, expressed the hope that understanding would emerge gradually between the two alliances during movement against the present undemocratic regime. Addressing the Bar, the Syed said the MMA had provided the outlet for the safe return of army from the political stage to the barracks in the shape of 17th Amendment. But it missed the chance, he added.

Commenting on the speech of Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, he said he (Mr Aziz) could not bring any good as a finance minister and he failed to give a clear agenda for the development of the country as the poverty had increased from 13 per cent to 39 per cent in the last four years.

Mr Hasan said the prime minister and his team could not rid the country of the loan economy of the IMF and World Bank. The Jamaat leader repeated his party's stance of over the issue of Kashmir that it should be tackled in accordance with the UN resolutions.

The U-turn on Kashmir and Afghanistan policy inflicted heavy loss on the aspiration of the people of the region, he added. He claimed that MQM chief Altaf Husain had visited India on behalf of Gen Musharraf. He spoke the language of the present regime, he added.

About the movement against regime, he said the MMA would hold a public meeting on Nov 28 in Karachi. He warned the government that the movement would spread all over the country if the regime tried to disrupt the public meeting. Replying to a question about sit-in by the political parties in front of the GHQ in Rawalpindi, he said it was yet to be decided.
