KARACHI, Nov 22: A new water treatment plant will be installed in North Karachi Industrial Area and PC-1 of the project will be completed shortly as part of the development of industrial areas of the city.

Official sources said that this decision was taken a few weeks back in a meeting of Industrial Area Development Board of North Karachi. It was attended by the officials of city government, the Export Promotion Bureau and representatives of the association.

The officials said that feasibility report of the treatment plant would be prepared by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board. It was also decided that the new plant with latest machinery would be procured and installed.

They said that a host of issues pertaining to the North Karachi industrial area were taken up during the meeting and a number of decisions were made to expedite the development works in the industrial area.

They further said the meeting decided that the private limited company proposed by the federal government for development of industrial areas would have to enter into an agreement with the city government for the execution of development works because land management rested with the city district government.

The meeting also decided that a comprehensive plan would be chalked out for the removal of encroachment from the area. Besides, representatives of the association pointed out that presence of slaughter house in the area had become a permanent source of nuisance for the area people.

"About 300 to 400 goats and buffaloes are slaughtered daily and taken in open trucks from slaughter house, which portrayed very ugly image of the area to foreign exporters," it was pointed out.

According to the officials, the meeting also decided to take necessary steps for the patchwork of Godhra Road. Other issues including posting of DDOs in boards, formation of sub-committee to prepare working procedures and rules for the boards, arrangements for fire fighting, action against illegal hydrants in the area, and removal of silt from the nullah, also came under consideration. -PPI
