MacGill puts skids under New Zealand

Published November 14, 2004

SYDNEY, Nov 13: Australia Test discard Stuart MacGill completed match figures of 8-109 on Saturday as New Zealand's batting line-up collapsed against New South Wales for a second time in their only warm-up game for next week's first Test in Brisbane.

Leg spinner MacGill took 4-52 as New Zealand were skittled for 201. Set 129 to win, the home side reached 25 for no wicket at the close of play on the third day of the four-day game.

New South Wales had posted a first innings lead of 73 when they were all out for 286 three overs into Saturday's play after resuming on 278 for eight. New Zealand's Mathew Sinclair then hit a fine 79 to add to his first innings of 88, sharing an opening stand of 110 with Mark Richardson, who was bowled by MacGill for 50.

No other batsman reached 20 as the Kiwis collapsed, losing their last seven wickets for 18. New Zealand's acting captain Scott Styris said: "Apart from the last session and 40 minutes in their first innings, we have done well in this match so far.

"We said at the start that the result was never that important. It was about preparing ourselves for next week." The Kiwis are resting captain Stephen Fleming, who only arrived in Australia on Saturday after spending the week in New Zealand with a mysterious viral infection he suffered on the Bangladesh tour.

Batsman Nathan Astle, who has a back complaint, and spinner Daniel Vettori, who has shoulder soreness, are also missing the New South Wales game. Australia host New Zealand in a two-test series this month, with matches in Brisbane from Nov 18-22 and Adelaide from Nov 26-30.
