KARACHI, Oct 6: A victim of police torture has been facing immense police pressure to withdraw an FIR he managed to get registered against two policemen through court orders.

Mohammad Ashraf, 30, resident of Rabia City Gulistan-i-Jauhar was picked up by Sub-inspector Shafeeq Tanoli posted at CID and his associate Nasir Lodhi last month.

Mr Ashraf told Dawn that he had objected to the illegal construction of a small room in Block-A/5 of Rabia City carried out by SI Shafeeq Tanoli, who also resided in the same apartment complex.

Following the incident, Shafeeq Tanoli along with his associate Nasir Lodhi picked up Mohammad Ashraf and took him to an unknown destination. During his detention, he was tortured for two days.

When he was allowed to go by his captors, he got his medico-legal examination carried out at Civil Hospital with the assistance of CPLC. The medico-legal report confirmed the victim's narration of events.

Mohammad Ashraf presented the medico-legal report before the court and narrated the incident. As per court orders, an FIR was lodged against the two policemen for alleged detention and torture.

In absence of any punitive action against the policemen, the complainant reached the home department and narrated his ordeal before the Additional Chief Secretary. Subsequently, a letter was sent to the Gulshan Town Police Officer, terming it a serious matter.

The letter stated: "ACS (Home) has desired that the matter be thoroughly enquired and action taken against the responsible police official for illegal detention and maltreatment of the complainant".

Mr Ashraf alleged that as the enquiry was directed against policemen, it had been dumped into a cold storage and the two policemen were enjoying full immunity. The complainant said that he had also written to the chairman of anti-corruption establishment seeking relief, but in vain. Under constant intimidations, Mohammad Ashraf is living in the same apartment fearing for his life.
