RAWALPINDI, Sept 26: Security has been further tightened around the Afghan embassy in Islamabad and its consulates in Peshawar and Quetta following intelligence that Al Qaeda and fighters loyal to Taliban might disrupt October 9 Afghan presidential polls , a security source said.

The government has directed the Islamabad administration and the provincial governments of NWFP and Balochistan to take further security measures for the Afghan embassy and consulates.

Meanwhile, as part of the reviewed security plan for the polls, Islamabad administration has called in 1,500 Rangers personnel for maintaining law and order on the occasion.

To review the security and polling plans, a meeting was held in Islamabad with chief commissioner in the chair. Inspector- General of Police Fiaz Ahmed Turo, SSP Liaquat Ali Khan, AIG special branch and representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) attended the meeting.

Under the security plan, walk-through gates will be installed at four polling stations - two each in sectors I-10 and G-9. The voters have to pass through the gates before casting their ballots. Election camps will be set up about 1,500 yards away from the polling booths.
