KARACHI, Sept 21: A meeting held under the chairmanship of City Nazim Naimatullah Khan reviewed transport projects to ease traffic flow on city roads.

The meeting held on Tuesday was attended by German Consul- General Detlef Kuester, EDO Transport Dr Tahir Soomro, Director-General Mass Transit Project Malik Zahirul Islam, and others.

Addressing the meeting, the nazim said that in order to provide better commuting facilities in Karachi, the city government had prepared six mass transit corridor development projects. For one of these corridors (i.e. from Sohrab Goth to Tower), an agreement had been signed with a Chinese company for light rail operation, he added.

For remaining five corridors, he said, other countries including Germany would be encouraged on BOT basis. He said that German companies could also invest in Karachi Urban Transport Scheme.

The nazim said that environment-friendly CNG buses had been brought on roads. In addition to Japanese and Chinese buses, the buses from German firms could also be plied, he added. He said that operation of trams or trolley buses in city's congested areas was also being examined.

Vast opportunities existed for participation in schemes on BOT basis, he added. The German Consul-General evinced keen interest in the city's traffic development programmes. -APP
