PRM vows to join PTCL workers' struggle

RAWALPINDI, Sept 17: The People's Rights Movement (PRM), an umbrella of political movements, has vowed to join the ongoing struggle of the Pakistan Telecommunications Company (PTCL) workers against what it called the government's anti-worker policies.

The PRM representatives and the Pakistan Telecom Employees Union (CBA) office-bearers at a meeting held at the union office here on Friday agreed to launch joint struggle for attainment of the workers rights.

They said that the struggle of the 50,000 Pakistan Telecommunications Company workers would not be successful unless it was joined by other working class groups. The Movement in this regard, reiterated its commitment to join the planned protest campaign of the telecom workers.

The campaign will begin with a public rally near the PTA building in Islamabad on Saturday. Another public rally will be held in Quetta on September 20 and the final rally in the federal capital on September 30.

The PRM representatives, Aasim Sajjad, Asha Amirali and Zahoor Khan, shared the concerns of the telecom union office-bearers over privatization of state-owned enter prizes under the neo-liberal economic policies of the government.

Already, SOEs such as PSO, OGDC, KESC and PIA have undergone the initial stages of privatization, the impacts of which will be disastrous for the working class at large, they observed.
