Qazi seeks purge of cruel policemen

KARACHI, Aug 30: MMA chief Qazi Hussain Ahmad has described the Aug 23 incident in Gizri police station as extremely brutal and the worst example of inhuman treatment.

Two robbery suspects had sustained fatal burns in the incident and the victims, before succumbing to their injuries, had accused police officials of putting them on fire.

Talking to the close relatives of the two victims, Saleem Khan and Ameer Zada, at Idara Noor-i-Haq here on Sunday, Qazi Saheb expressed his grief and sorrow on behalf of the MMA and Jamaat-i-Islami over the tragic deaths. He said it was not sort of an ordinary incident that could be ignored. The police personnel involved in the heinous crime must be handed exemplary punishment.

He assured the bereaved of all moral support through every forum for justice. He said that both the government and the opposition should take notice of the tragedy and work jointly to avoid recurrence of such incidents in future.

The MMA chief remarked that the tragedy showed that while police had already failed in ensuring safety and security of citizens, it had also become a serious threat to the life and property of ordinary people.

"They have become a symbol of terrorism," he added. Demanding a purge in police force, he said police personnel must undergo the training which could produce a force for the assistance of people.
