VEHARI, Aug 29: Over Rs1 million was misappropriated and about 15,000 forms for computerized national identity cards went 'missing' at the Nadra office in Muslim Town.

Sources said over 250 private representatives of national database and registration authority collected forms for CNICs with a fee of Rs50 per head throughout the district during the last one year.

Later, they neither submitted the forms nor deposited the amount to the Nadra office and managed their escape. The registration authority has allegedly failed to recover the amount and take strict action against its representatives.

Mohammad Hashim of Mailsi told this correspondent here on Saturday that he and his family members had submitted eight forms to the Nadra representative with a fee of Rs400 about one year ago.

He time and again visited the office, but his family record and ID forms were not available there. The official concerned said he should apply again for CNICs, Mr Hashim said. Same is the case with a large number of applicants.

When contacted, Nadra assistant registrar Khurshid Anwer said that about 13,742 forms were not submitted along with the fee by the representatives. "However, we have cancelled their licences and registered cases against 25 representatives," he said.

Mr Anwer said only a few thousands were recovered from some of the representatives. "A big amount of over Rs1 million is still recoverable from the representatives who have left the job without informing the respective Nadra officials."

Meanwhile, as many as 10 applicants told Dawn that the Nadra swift centre near high school had failed to issue cards with ordinary fee in a month and an urgent card in two weeks. A card seeker said he submitted his form four months ago but was still awaiting the delivery.

Some others said when they visited the Nadra swift centre they were told that their data had been sent for verification to Islamabad head office. Some officials suggested them to visit the authority's office in Muslim Town as the Islamabad office had sent their data there.
