Vijay and Aqeel grab doubles crown

LAHORE, Aug 23: Vijay Kannan of India in partnership with Pakistan's Aqeel Khan won the ITF Satellite Circuit (second leg) doubles' title defeating Sakai Toshiaki (Japan)-Mirko Pehar (USA) in a well-contested final at the Model Town Club court on Monday.

Aqeel and Vijay won with the score line of 6-4, 7-6 (8/6). Aqeel, had lost the singles' final to Toshiaki on Sunday. The main round of the third leg of the circuit begins at the same venue from Tuesday after completion of the qualifying round on Monday.

From Pakistan four players - Mohammad Shafiq, Jalil Khan, Muteen-ur-Rehman Pasha, Shahzad Khan - have been awarded wildcards. At the end of the qualifying round eight players entered the main round making it a 32-man draw.

RESULTS:

MEN'S DOUBLES (FINAL): Vijay-Kannan (India)-Aqeel Khan (Pakistan) bt Sakai Toshiaki (Japan)-Mirko Pehar (USA) 6-4, 7-6 (8/6).

THIRD LEG (QUALIFYING ROUND): Dmitry Ivanov (Uzbekistan) bt Masood (Pak) 6-2, 4-2 (retd hurt). Tommoso Cafferata (Italy) got bye against Tadatta Arindam (India). Kamil Filali (Morocco) bt Adnan Khan (Pak) 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Manchit Madan (India) bt Yannick Nelord (India) 6-4, 6-4. Atsumumi Yushickawa (Japan) bt Ganguly Wrick (India) 6-3, 6-2. Gulati Sittharth (India) bt Ready Sujai (India) 6-3, 6-1. Sandeep Kumar (India) bt Mahmood Khan (Pak) 6-1, 7-6 (4). Dane Fernandez (Australia) bt Vishal Gur (India) 6-1, 6-1.
