HYDERABAD, Aug 11: Pakistan Pharmacists Association provincial joint secretary Haider Zaidi has called upon the Sindh government to take action against manufacturers and dealers of substandard and spurious drugs in the district.

Speaking at a news conference at the press club here on Wednesday, he said spurious drugs were also being supplied to towns in interior of Sindh. He pointed out that the City police had registered an FIR against a company for manufacturing substandard medicines but had taken no action against the culprits.

He alleged that the business of illicit drugs was being done under the patronage of officials. Mr Zaidi urged the Sindh government to emulate Punjab which had appointed drug inspectors at the tehsil level to check the sale, purchase and production of spurious drugs.

He demanded promulgation of an ordinance against spurious drugs and appealed to wholesale and retail dealers and chemists not to keep substandard medicines in their shops. Mr Zaidi called upon drug inspectors to take action against individuals and companies engaged in the production and sale of substandard medicines.

HUNGER STRIKE: A group of people, under the banner of the All Kolhi Association, Sindh, observed a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Wednesday to protest against the arrest of members of the Kolhi community by the Nagarparkar police at the insistence of local feudal lords.

Speaking on the occasion, Heerji Kolhi, Damro Kolhi and Arjun Kolhi claimed that an operation had been launched against members of the Kolhi community in Nagarparkar for the last one month.

They alleged that many innocent people had been implicated in false cases and sent to jail. They said hundreds of villagers had been forced to migrate. They demanded an inquiry into the matter. They said they would resort to hunger strike unto death if justice was not restored.
