BAHAWALPUR, Aug 10: An inquiry into alleged attestation of the fake death certificate of a 'dacoit' was adjourned for two days when the chief suspect sought time from the committee to explain his stance.

Appearing before the three-member committee, headed by Aftab Ahmad Gudu, Union Council V councillor Mehtab Kausar Bokhari sought time to record his evidence on the issuance of death certificate, which he had attested.

Earlier, the inquiry committee had summoned Mr Bokhari on Aug 9 (Monday), but the inquiry could not be conducted owing to fickle weather. According to UC Nazim Sheikh Azizur Rahman, Mr Bokhari stated before the convener that he wanted to meet and discuss the matter with the parents of accused Faisal Shahzad Ghoraya, whose fake death certificate was issued by the union council and sent to a sessions court in Karachi by his uncle.

The UC Nazim told Dawn that he had learnt that Faisal Shahzad was serving the National Highway and Motorway Police, but was not unaware of his place of posting.

POLICE POSTS: The Punjab government has decided to appoint superintendents of police (special branches) at each of the former divisional headquarters. The step was being taken to improve the performance and efficiency of the special branch at the district level.

Earlier, the SPs of special branch were posted at each of the zonal headquarters. In pursuance of the government's decision, now SP special branches will be appointed in Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Multan. With the appointment of new SPs, new staff members will be added to the existing strength and more vehicles given to the police stations.

ABSOLVED OF CHARGES: Federal Science and Technology Parliamentary Secretary Makhdoom Syed Ali Hassan Gillani and his associates have been absolved of charges of interference in official duty and beating up a tehsil municipal officer of Ahmedpur East.

A case was instituted against the secretary and his companions by Uch Sharif police six months ago. According to the complaint lodged by the TMO, the secretary and his men allegedly opposed an anti-encroachment operation at Uch Sharif.

However, Mr Gillani denied the charge and said he was implicated in a case. The provincial government had conducted an inquiry into the case and found the suspects innocent.
