GUJRANWALA, Aug 6: Farmers resented increase in the prices of fertilizer, oil, pesticides and agricultural equipment and asked the government to provide them a relief package.
At a meeting held here on Friday, Kisan Board and Kisan Bachao Tehrik leaders Allah Ditta Cheema, Javed Iqbal Manj and other office bearers deplored that the government had enhanced urea dung price from Rs410 to Rs470 per bag.
They said the government had imposed flat rate water cess on agricultural land instead of giving subsidy to farmers and resolving the water shortage problem. The government, they regretted, had withdrawn the 33 per cent subsidy given to farmers last year for the use of power supply for agricultural purpose.
They demanded that the farmers whose paddy and fodder crops had been damaged due to flood in Wahando recently should be exempted from the water cess and agricultural tax.
LITERACY CENTRE: A literacy centre set up at the central jail under the programme of education for all will benefit prisoners. This was stated by Executive District Officer (Literacy) Ms Shahida while speaking at a meeting here on Friday.
She pointed out that as many as 239 literacy centres had been established in the district while 124 centres had been set up in remote areas of the Wazirabad tehsil. She said some 40 literacy centres were set up at Naushera Virkan tehsil and 25 each in Kamoki, Sadar and City tehsils, respectively.
The government wanted to enhance the literacy rate through these literacy centres and the people should avail the opportunity for education was imperative for the progress and prosperity of the country, she added.
