KHAAR, Aug 5: Five persons were killed and 10 injured when a speeding passenger pick-up overturned after running over pedestrians in Khaar on Thursday. The pick-up was coming from Inayat Kalay to Khaar, the headquarters of Bajaur Agency, when the driver lost control, eyewitnesses said.

The vehicle ran over pedestrians, killing four on the spot and injuring 10 others, and overturned, they said. The driver also died in the accident. The injured were admitted to the agency headquarters hospital and the condition of four of them is stated to be serious.

The dead were identified as pick-up driver Aslam Khan, Yaqoob Khan, Buzarg Shah, Sultan and Shahpur Khan. While the four critical injured are Abdur Rab Khan, Sohail Khan, Rustam Khan and Mohammad Shah. Hospital sources said they would be shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar.

Meanwhile, the political administration has announced Rs20,000 compensation each for the families of the dead. An official told Dawn that the administration would also bear all the hospital expenses of the injured.
