MITHI, Aug 2: Chief Election Commissioner Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar has directed relevant functionaries to take measures to conduct the by-election in the Tharparkar constituency in a peaceful and transparent manner.
A handout issued here said Justice Dogar gave the directive at a meeting held at the Darbar Hall on Monday. Election Commission secretary Hassan Mohammad, Sindh Election Commissioner Ahmad Ali Halepoto, Election Commission members Justice Nasim Sikandar of the Lahore High Court, Justice Ahmad Khan Lashari of the Balochistan High Court and Justice Ahsanullah Bhatti of the Peshawar High Court, Sindh Chief Secretary Mohammad Aslam Sanjrani, IGP Syed Kamal Shah and other officials attended the meeting.
Giving a briefing to the CEC, the DPO of Tharparkar said extra police contingents would be deployed at sensitive polling stations. He said 47 out of 120 polling stations had been declared sensitive.
Justice Dogar ordered that people possessing entry passes, issued by the competent authority, should only be allowed to enter polling stations. He said presiding officers would be given powers of a first class magistrate. The CEC said provision of funds would be ensured to complete the election process without any impediment.
CHIEF MINISTER: Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim at the circuit house here on Sunday distributed cheques among people affected by rains and consequent floods last year.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Rahim directed members of relief committees to distribute the remaining cheques among the victims in a transparent manner. Earlier, talking to journalists, the chief minister said measures were being taken to upgrade the Mithi Civil Hospital and establish an anti-snake venom laboratory at the hospital. He said doctors from Thar who were serving elsewhere would be transferred to their native district.
