TULKARM, July 25: Israeli forces shot and killed six Palestinians, including two local militant leaders, on Sunday in a raid in the West Bank town of Tulkarm, Palestinian security sources said.

The soldiers ambushed members of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an offshoot of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, and then killed six of them in a shootout, the sources said. An Israeli military source confirmed that troops had clashed with gunmen in Tulkarm but had no immediate details to provide.

AIR STRIKE: Two Israeli helicopters struck a house in the Zeitun neighbourhood of Gaza City late on Sunday, returning to the same target hit by Israeli aircraft earlier in the day, Palestinian officials said.

There was no immediate word on casualties from the later raid but the earlier missile strike wounded three people, medics said. Palestinian sources said the house targeted belonged to a member of the Hamas movement but Israeli sources insisted it was a makeshift armaments workshop.

Two Palestinian militants, including a leader of the armed wing of the radical group Islamic Jihad, were killed in an Israeli air strike in the same area on Thursday night. -Agencies
