Ashrawi sees more trouble

ZURICH, July 25: Veteran Palestinian lawmaker Hanan Ashrawi called on Yasser Arafat to end his "one-man-show" in the Palestinian Authority and warned on Sunday of more unrest in Gaza as weapons flow into the troubled strip.

Arafat's leadership has come under fire as gunmen sparked chaos in Gaza by kidnapping a number of Palestinian officials and foreigners and demanding the Palestinian president to reform the Palestinian Authority and security forces.

There has also been widespread unrest among younger members of Arafat's Fatah party over charges of high-level corruption. "As long as he controls the security forces he is breaking the fundamental law," Ashrawi, a prominent Palestinian Christian, said in an interview in the Swiss newspaper "SonntagsBlick".

"We should bring this one-man-show behind us," Ashrawi said. "Instead of talking about (individual) people, we should at last be talking about institutions and laws." -Reuters
