SHEIKHUPURA, May 22: Scores of transporters have complained against what they called extortion by traffic police (headquarters) inspector.

Talking to newsmen on Wednesday, the delegation alleged Inspector Khalid Qureshi had been extorting money from motorists on one pretext or the other.

They alleged the police official led pickets on major roads in the district to extort money from the commuters. Some of the transporters had changed their routes to avoid his excesses, they said.

Transporters Maqbool Ahmad, Riaz Ahmad Shaikh, Khalid alias Kaka, Ustad Imtiaz, Shahzad Shaikh and others alleged the inspector either impounded their vehicles or imposed heavy fines in case of delay in monthly payment.

Several complaints regarding the official’s corruption had been lodged with police high-ups, they claimed, adding no action had so far been taken against him.

The complainants demanded that an impartial inquiry should be conducted against the inspector.

When contacted, the inspector denied any charges levelled against him.

He insisted those found violating traffic rules would be given no relief.
