LAHORE, July 1: The Lahore High Court on Thursday barred the University of Engineering and Technology from expelling a Palestinian student. Accepting the writ petition of Nidal Omer, Justice Syed Tasaddaq Husain Jilani also set aside the university notice which sought the youth from Gaza, Palestine, to vacate the UET hostel.

Nidal was admitted to the Department of Hydraulic Sciences for his master's degree earlier this year. A few months later, the registrar office served on him a notice saying he was not eligible to remain on the university rolls.

The reason spelled out in the notice was that he had not passed his BSc examination in the first division which was a condition for the admission to the department. At the same time, the university also asked him to leave the hostel room as he was not an eligible student.

Nidal challenged the UET notice through a writ petition in which he had submitted that the university prospectus which he secured from Lahore through mail in his country, provided no condition that only BSc first division students could apply for admission to MSc.

He submitted that the fact that he was allowed admission after application from his country, was an evidence that no such condition was attached to the admission.
