Iranian FM to visit Cuba

HAVANA, June 30: Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi on Thursday will make an official visit to Cuba, where he will meet with his Cuban counterpart Felipe Perez Roque, the foreign ministry here said.

Though no other events are scheduled, President Fidel Castro could also decide to meet with Kharazi, given the countries' warm relations and history of frequent interaction.

Iranian President Mohammad Khatami visited Cuba in September 2000, and first vice president Hassan Ebrahim Habibi visited the island, the only communist-run nation in the Americas, in July 1999 and April 2000, heading his country's delegation to the Group of 77 summit in Havana.

Castro visited Iran in May 2001, after visits by Perez Roque, Vice President Carlos Lage and speaker Ricardo Alarcon. -AFP
