KARACHI, June 28: Two doctors who had reportedly been kidnapped on June 17 had provided medical treatment to the members of the Jundullah group, the arrested member of the outfit, Ataur Rehman, told investigators.

An official on condition of anonymity said Ataur Rehman was being grilled as he was the ring leader of the Jundullah group. The police had revealed on June 13 that eight alleged terrorists had been arrested, including Ataur Rehman, for their involvement in the attack on the Corps Commander Karachi.

During interrogations Ataur Rehman said Dr Akmal Waheed, who worked for the National Institute of Cardio-Vascular Diseases, and Dr Arshad Waheed, who worked for the JPMC, were in close contact with the members of Jundullah. Whenever needed, the two doctors provided medical treatment to the members of the group, claimed Ataur Rehman.

Dr Akmal Waheed and Dr Arshad Waheed went missing while on their way home on June 17. After their family received a call demanding Rs10 million for their release, an FIR was registered for kidnapping against unknown people.

Following the arrest of the eight suspects, the police had picked up four suspects after different raids, raising the number of arrests to 12. The IG Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, on June 13 said at a press conference that the group comprised 20 members.

Sources said Ataur Rehman and his gang members had disclosed some names and more arrests were expected in a day or two. The police said the arrested members were involved in blasts at the Bible Society, Golf Club, PACC, attack on the Rangers, attack on Gulistan-i-Jauhar police station and attack on the corps commander.

Sources said the suspects had links with Al-Qaeda and foreigners in Wana. The suspects had visited Afghanistan many times for Jihad. The police had also announced the arrest of Masoob Aroochi, a relative of Khalid Shaikh Mohammad, allegedly involved in US journalist Daniel Pearl's killing. However, the police has not disclosed his whereabouts since the announcement of his arrest.
