GUJRANWALA, June 23: An eyewitness of the murder of PPP city president Chaudhry Khalid Humayun was shot at and injured by assailants here on Wednesday.

Reports said Mehr Muhammad Babar, a contractor at the Gulshan Iqbal Park ticket booth, was supervising work when armed men reached there and opened fire on him, leaving him injured.

Babar was taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in critical condition. Police have registered a case against the suspects. They said it was second attempt on the contractor's life. The murder case is being heard by the Anti-Terrorism Court.

BUDGET PROPOSALS: The city tehsil council will present a tax-free budget, which is being finalized in the light of proposals of public representatives. This was stated by City Nazim Babu Javed Ahmad while speaking at a pre-budget meeting at his office on Wednesday.

He said streetlights on the GT Road and in markets were being installed on a priority to facilitate the public. A substantial amount had been allocated in the budget for various construction projects, including that of Jinnah Hall at municipal complex, he said.

Former mayor Alhaj Muhammad Aslam Butt and Nazims and Naib Nazims of union councils presented proposals for development projects. They appreciated the city tehsil council for constructing a green belt along the GT road.

SEWERAGE: The Water and Sanitation Agency on Wednesday started construction work on a sewerage project announced by the chief minister. Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Punjab Food Minister Chaudhry Iqbal said the government was taking interest in resolving the problems of the people regarding drainage and drinking water while the chief minister had already announced a special package for Gujranwala during his visit a few months ago.

He said the Khiali sewerage project would be completed with an expenditure of Rs10 million, benefiting about 75,000 population of the area.

ASI HELD: The district police on Wednesday arrested an assistant sub-inspector allegedly for harassing the family members of a senior official of an intelligence agency.

Near the Lohianwala Bypass Intersection on the GT Road, Tehsin and two constables, riding a private car, intercepted the family for checking and 'humiliated' them. On a complaint, DPO Saud Aziz got the ASI arrested while the two constables escaped.
