PPP seeks EC's intervention

LAHORE, June 22: The Lahore Coordination Committee of the PPP on Tuesday urged the judiciary and the Election Commission of Pakistan to take notice of the unlawful means being used by the ruling party to win by-election to four provincial assembly seats.

Party leader Munir Ahmad Khan said at a news conference after the LCC meeting that the Lahore SSP had been transferred to rig the polls on the Lahore seat. In Bahawalpur, he said, the government was using the chief minister's discretionary funds, the funds of the district government and providing ad hoc jobs to win support of the electorate.

The LCC expressed concern over the government's failure to appoint any commission to probe the murder of Munawwar Suharwardy. The participants said it was also regrettable that no accused had so far been arrested.

Those who attended the meeting included Jehangir Badr, Khalid Kharal, Qasim Zia, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Sardar Assef Ahmad Ali, Malik Mushtaq Awan and Mian Misbahur Rehman. PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah told reporters that the government was determined to win the vacant seats by all means.

He said the administrative changes both in Lahore and Bahawalpur had been made to get the desired results. Meanwhile, PML-N former MPA Sheikh Amjad Aziz was arrested on Tuesday after a local court dismissed his bail application.
