Shabbir to be under scrutiny

Published June 19, 2004

LAHORE, June 18: Medium-pacer Shabbir Ahmad has been included in the list of probables announced for the Asia Cup on Friday, but the bowler will be under observation of the ICC umpires for his suspect bowling action , if selected for the event.

Shabbir was reported by the umpires in the last One-day of the five match series in New Zealand early this year. The bowler was to be given six weeks to rectify his bowling action. But the period could not begin because a wrong video footage had been sent to the ICC by the umpires.

That gave Shabbir advantage and he played some matches in home series against India. However, the ICC now has received the right video tapes and Shabbir will be under observation.

In case of further complaints, the ICC will appoint a panel to watch the action and decide its legality. In case of further suspect bowling action Shabbir will face a penalty of one-year suspension.

The PCB had sent Shabbir to Australia to get his bowling action rectified by Daryl Foster but the report of which has not been made public so far. Foster has also been hired for the National Cricket Academy and is coming to Pakistan on June24for two-week training.
