KARACHI, June 13: A college boy was injured in an explosion caused by a home-made grenade outside the Orangi Town police station on Saturday evening. Police allegedly implicated Zeeshan, 18, into the explosion.

"We have arrested carrier of the grenade, which exploded due to mishandling and caused injuries to the carrier," Orangi Town Police Officer Rasheed Khan told Dawn. ccording to police, Zeeshan carrying the grenade was approaching the police station with the intention of attack when the grenade went off and he suffered wounds.

However, Zeeshan's father Dr Rehan disputed the police claim and said: "My son was going to the police station to lodge a report about missing of an identity card when he was injured in the blast."

Resident of Orangi Town's Sector 1-D, Dr Rehan said that his son, studying in the city government college, had recently taken the first year (intermediate) exams. "My son has never been picked up by police nor he was wanted in any case," he added.

Lying in a hospital swathed with bandages, Zeeshan said: "I was going to the police station to lodge a report that my uncle's identity card has been misplaced. As I was approaching the police station, pye-dogs barked at me and I frantically started running. My foot hit something, which exploded and I fell on the ground with my back bleeding."

He said that some policemen, standing at the main entrance of the police station, rushed to him and started beating him mercilessly. "They were beating me and accusing me of attacking the police station. I have nothing to do with that bomb. It's totally a baseless allegation," he asserted.

Zeeshan was initially taken to the police station, however, no case was registered against him. Later, police shifted Zeeshan to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where he was provided treatment, sources said.

A duty officer at Orangi Town police station ASI Ibrahim said that the case was not yet registered but "we will certainly register it against the career, as we have taken him into custody."
