KARACHI, May 21: Barely ten days are left for the summer vacations, and the government primary schools in Lyari Town have been running short of textbooks, it is learnt.

This was revealed during a meeting of the officials of education department, city government Karachi and the union Nazims of the town. The town’s administration took a serious note of the situation in a communication to the city government.

There are 110 primary government schools (male) with 10,750 students, including 1,796 newly admitted. For all these students, 550 sets of textbooks are available for distribution which means each school would get five sets.

The position for girl students is more deplorable. There are 54 primary girls schools with 9,270 students. For them only 10,000 textbooks are available. The officials are unable to explain how these books would be distributed.

It is also surprising that all these textbooks are in Urdu and Sindhi languages at the ratio of 50-50, whereas there are very few Sindhi schools in the area.

The Lyari Town administration has expressed concern over the situation, saying that the town is being treated discriminately, despite the fact that no new school was opened in the Town.

Moreover, it was revealed that the school management committee funds of Rs4,000 per classroom for maintenance purposes have also been withheld.

In view of the situation, the Lyari Town administration has decided to return the textbooks to the education department for disposal as deemed fit.
