KARACHI, June 7: Acting President of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) Qazi Hussain Ahmed, has claimed that street crime in the city was reaching a peak as there were widespread complaints of snatching of mobile phones and other belongings , especially jewellry and bags from women, as well as dacoities in broad daylight.

"Such incidents have become order of the day," he observed while addressing MMA leaders at the residence of Shah Faridul Haq, head of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Pakistan here on Monday. Expressing his view that people were fed up with the provincial government, he said their feeling was manifested in the complete strike observed last Friday.

City chief of Jamaat-i-Islami Mairajul Huda Siddiqui, Allama Hassan Turabi, Mufti Jamil Ahmed Naeemi, Maulana Abdul Karim Abid, Hashim Siddiqui, Khan Muhammad Rabbani, Hafiz Muhammad Taqi and Sarfraz Ahmed were among others present on the occasion.

The meeting appreciated and thanked Karachiites for responding positively to the MMA's call for a peaceful strike. It was a clear message to those behind the bids to spread anarchy in the city that their conspiracies would never succeed, it observed.

The meeting also decided to utilize all available resources in preaching harmony among different segments of society and sects. It impressed upon MMA activists to maintain contacts with common men and inform them about "the poor performance showed by provincial ministers and advisers, who had failed to deliver goods to masses."

The MMA leaders finalized arrangements for a public meeting scheduled for June 11 in Karachi to pay homage to Mufti Nizamuddin Shamzai and all others victims of terrorism and violence in the city.

The meeting was told that an MMA Balochistan delegation, headed by Maulana Hafiz Muhammad Shirazi, would soon visit Karachi and visit the residences of the victims of blasts.

Meanwhile, Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui, in a statement, described the Yakjehti rally, organized by Governor Ishratul Ibad on Sunday, as a 'flopped show'. Unless practical steps are taken, law and order cannot be maintained in Karachi," he said while rejecting the government's statements on curbing terrorism as 'mere lip-service'.

"People know that one the one hand, terrorists are being released on parole, while on the other, peace rallies are being staged... this is ridiculous," he added. -PPI
