GUJRANWALA, May 21: Textbooks of primary schools meant for free distribution among students are being marketed openly, making a mockery of the Punjab government claim.
A source said on Friday that some 50 per cent primary students could not get free textbooks as these were being sold in the market by booksellers by removing their title pages.
Some citizens pointed out that booksellers were demanding higher prices for the textbooks announced by the government free of cost. Citizens called upon the Punjab chief minister to hold an inquiry into the sale of free textbooks in the market and officials involved in the scam should be taken to task.
Chargesheet: A local court on Thursday gave vent to its disquiet for submitting incomplete charge sheet against the accused involved in the murder of noted Punjabi film actor Sultan Rahi.
Judge Riazul Hassan directed the Sadar SHO to complete the charge sheet and produce it before court during next hearing on May 30. The police had challaned accused Nazir Ahmad of Chand Da Qila by-pass in the murder of Sultan Rahi, who had been caught by some agency from Jhelum and handed over to police.
The accused had made a clean breast of committing the crime when the police produced him before a court in Jhelum some one month ago. Later, the Jhelum police had handed over the accused to Gujranwala Sadar police where the murder case of the film star had been registered.
It was stated that the accused had changed his statement and denied the killing of Sultan Rahi. It may be mentioned that the police had already declared Sajid alias Sajo Khan as the killer of Sultan Rahi, who was later killed in an encounter.
WARNED: The district government warned flour mill owners and hoarders that it would recover wheat from their godowns in a crackdown if they did not provide 50 per cent wheat to the government.
This was decided in a meeting presided over by DCO Fazeel Asgher here on Friday while the district food controller and other senior officers of the district government were also present on the occasion.
The meeting made it clear that at least 100,000 metric tons of wheat target would be achieved at all cost. The meeting warned that flour mill owners and shopkeepers would be taken to task if they created the wheat crisis.
ESCAPES: An accused involved in a dacoity case escaped from Cantonment police station when an investigation officer fell asleep on his chair during interrogation here on Friday. The SHO, however, registered a case against the IO and sent him behind bars.
Abid Masih case was caught red-handed by area people and handed him over to the Cantonment police. ASI Suleman was interrogating him after taking him out from the lock-up.
In the meantime, the ASI fell asleep, providing enough opportunity to the accused to slip away. At this, SHO Tahir Mahmood Cheema registered a case against the ASI and locked him.
