MULTAN, May 21: The general body of the Bahauddin Zakariya University Academic Staff Association has rejected the Model University Ordinance and the Tenure Track System.

At a meeting held here the other day with Prof Abdul Rauf Shaikh in the chair, the association agreed to implement the proposed teacher's evaluation system with some reservations which, it stressed, needed to be addressed immediately.

It proposed following amendments to the evaluation system: The existing environment needs to be improved with teacher's evaluation by students being given relatively less weightage; research facilities need to be enhanced, and the chairman needs to give a clear vision of targets and objectives to every faculty member for the whole year before the start of the summer vacation.

Furthermore, the courses need to be allocated to every faculty member well in time before the start of the next semester/academic year, and the chairmen/deans should be appointed on a rotation basis; and centralization of power in this regard be abolished.

Dacoit killed: An alleged dacoit was killed while his two accomplices surrendered to police after an encounter in the riverine belt of Jalalpur Pirwala on Friday.

Police said they raided Mauza Bait alongside the river Chenab on a tip-off to arrest proclaimed offender Ghulam Abbas alias Basu. However, the outlaws opened fire on seeing the police. At this, Jalalpur Pirwala SDPO Syed Hasan Shah hastened to the troubled spot with the reinforcement. However, a shootout that ensued between the police and outlaws came to a halt after sometime.

The SDPO said when searched Basu was found dead while his accomplices Mushtaq and Afzal alias Gogi surrendered to police. He said Basu was wanted in 11 cases of dacoity and robbery while his two accomplices were also POs in various cases registered with the area police stations. Body of the alleged outlaw was sent to Multan for autopsy.
