KARACHI, May 19: More than 50 handicapped children who are getting formal education, as well skill development activity in a rehabilitation centre in Lyari Town, are facing a lot of difficulties due to non-availability of transport facilities.

It is learnt that official vehicle of the centre is totally damaged and needed repairs. The matter about repair of the vehicle was also raised by the Lyari Town Nazim before the City Nazim in a communication sent to him on Feb 21, but it could not be resolved due to bureaucratic wranglings.

A prominent social worker of the locality, Abdul Majeed Mandi, who had lobbied for the project, said he had contacted the relevant quarters for provision of transport facility to enable the disabled students to reach the centre, but his efforts could not produce any results.

He said the number of the enrolled children at the centre has decreased as many parents could not bear the transport expenses. The RCMHC is a training centre, set up in Lyari Town in 1997 to provide formal education, as well as skill development activities for the rehabilitation of the disabled children to make them a useful citizen of the society.

The centre is providing coaching facilities to more than 50 children which include deaf and dumb, the blind and physically handicapped children. It has also provided pick and drop facility to the children from their houses to the centre, besides free books and uniform and free lunch are given to the children. It has also a tailoring workshop, a wood-work shop and a carpet-weaving shop.
