FAISALABAD, May 20: The Pakistan Peoples Party would launch a country-wide movement to activate its activists at the union council level on the instructions of chairperson Benazir Bhutto.

This was claimed by Punjab secretary-general Rana Aftab Khan while talking to newsmen here on Monday. Mr Khan had a meeting with Ms Bhutto in Dubai recently.

He claimed that Ms Bhutto would return to the country before general elections.

He said various matters, including party policy, anti-PPP statement by the rulers and arrests of its workers and leaders were discussed with Ms Bhutto. She has asked the party not to strike a deal with the military regime at any cost.

He said the PPP leader favoured an interim government for holding fair and transparent elections.

Mr Aftab said the chairperson asked to hold rallies and meetings at tehsil level to muster support of people for forthcoming general elections. She stressed that efficient and loyal workers should be given tickets for contesting elections.

He said special committees would be constituted for holding meetings people belonging to all walks of life to inform them about the PPP’s reformed manifesto and ill conceived policies of the government.

He claimed that the party has a huge vote bank and would be the single largest party in the national and provincial assemblies. The leaders of the political parties having government backing have no value even in their hometowns and people would reject them, he added.

He said the matter of election alliance with other parties was also discussed in Dubai and the Central Working Committee was empowered to decide the matter at appropriate time.
