JAKARTA, May 7: China's formidable badminton squad got off to a flying start in their bid for dual Thomas and Uber Cup triumphs on Friday with victory in both the men's and women's opening games.
China's men took an unbeatable lead 3-0 against the lowly United States as play continued in Friday's late matches. World number one Lin Dan dropped just two points on his way to a 15-0, 15-2 humbling of Eric Go, while world champion Xia Xuanze was similarly dominant in his 15-2, 15-1 victory over Kevin Han.
Meanwhile world number two Chen Hong ran out 15-3, 15-3 winner over Howard Bach. China are seeded top for both the Thomas and Uber cups, the premier men's and women's team badminton competitions, and are hoping success here will be the springboard for an unprecedented clean sweep at this year's Olympics.
Earlier, China's women had confirmed their status as red-hot favourites for the Uber Cup with a 5-0 demolition of hosts Indonesia. The Chinese, aiming for their fourth straight title, cruised past the home side with the loss of just one game.
World number one Gong Ruina, who heads a Chinese one-two-three at the top of the women's rankings, was surprisingly the guilty party as she dropped the second game against Silvi Antarini.
She received a lengthy dressing-down from coach Li Yongbo for her lapse in concentration despite overcoming a tiring Antarini and vociferous home support to win 11-3, 3-11, 11-3. Japan also won their opening group game against Malaysia 5-0.
In the men's competition third and fourth seeds Malaysia and South Korea opened their campaigns by whitewashing South Africa and New Zealand respectively.
