ISLAMABAD, May 6: The effort of the International Cricket Council (ICC) to promote the game by holding the Pakistan-Sri Lanka three-match One-day series later this month in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur is in danger of being called off due to lack of interest shown by sponsors.

Malaysia has so far organised two major cricketing events, the Commonwealth Games cricket and the ICC trophy. But non- availability of proper grounds and suitable wickets have been two serious problem plaguing the Malaysian Cricket Council (MCC).

Earlier, the matches were played there on matting but according to ICC rules, international games are only allowed on proper wickets or portable tracks. With the country lacking suitable wickets and being unable to afford portable tracks, the fate of the tournament looks bleak.

The organisers have already paid US$50,000 each to both the teams as guarantee money and even the telecast rights of the series has been sold. Pakistan is due to leave for Malaysia on May 22 and according to a tentative schedule were to play their opening match on May 27.

Companies that sponsor cricket throughout the world have shied away from associating themselves with the Malaysia tournament and that has come as a big let down for the organisers.

The cancellation of the series, which looks quite possible, would be a huge setback for the ICC because the world body is looking to promote the game in the region. -APP
