LAHORE, May 6: Robbers shot dead a driver and took away Rs1.2 million in cash and prize bonds on the Sarwar Road in Cantonment on Thursday. Mian Mohammad told police that he along with his wife drew Rs700,000 in cash and Rs500,000 worth prize bonds from the State Bank on The Mall.

He said they were on their way home in Cantonment when two motorcyclists stopped their car near St John Park. He said his driver, Tariq, 37, put up resistance due to which the robbers opened fire on him. They snatched the cash and prize bonds and fled.

The injured driver was taken to the Combined Military Hospital where he breathed his last. The body was sent to the city mortuary for autopsy. Lahore city police chief DIG Tariq Saleem has constituted three teams to arrest the robbers.

The teams, headed by three SPs, collected evidence from the scene of crime and recorded statements of the complainant and eyewitnesses. They claimed to have taken two men into custody.

The police chief directed the teams to keep him abreast of the development in the case and bring the culprits to book at the earliest. Meanwhile, four robbers stormed into Naseemullah's house at Garden Town's B Block, and took away cash and jewellery worth Rs400,000.

ARREST: Saddar division police claimed on Thursday to have arrested four members of an alleged gang of robbers. The police claimed that Asif, Tariq, Waris and Ghulam Nabi had confessed eight crimes against property. Two pistols, 15 bullets and Rs25,000 in cash were recovered from them.
