KARACHI, May 5: Sindh Chief Secretary Dr Mutawakkil Kazi on Wednesday advised the fisheries and livestock department to ensure foolproof enforcement of law to protect seafood.

"It is our national wealth, which must be saved," he said while presiding over a meeting regarding unauthorized fishing by deep-sea trawlers. The meeting, convened on the complaints of Fishermen's Cooperative Society and small fishermen, discussed specific information regarding the vessels involved in unauthorized fishing.

It considered enhancement of fishing licence fee for local trawlers and adopting measures to divert fishing pressure. The chief secretary noted the need for restructuring of the fisheries department for its effective working and called for round-the-clock monitoring to check unauthorized fishing.

He called for modernization of the 'net system' so that sea life was protected and betterment of small fishermen ensured.

DOW VARSITY: Presiding over another meeting, the chief secretary advised the provincial services and finance department to coordinate with the health department in evolving a line of action regarding the Dow University of Health Sciences.

The meeting considered financial grant to the university, service documentation, provision for emoluments of house officers and graduates, development schemes, allocation of land in the proposed education city, asset and property rights and establishment of endowment funds. -APP/PPI
